What is an environmental sticker (Umweltplakette)?

The environmental sticker, or "Umweltplakette," is a sticker required to enter "environmental zones" (Umweltzonen) in most major German cities. This system was introduced to reduce air pollution from particulate matter and nitrogen oxides in urban centers.

Environmental zones are marked with special road signs indicating which sticker is required for entry. Driving into such a zone without the necessary sticker can result in a fine.

The purpose of this measure is to restrict the movement of older vehicles with high emissions, thereby improving air quality in densely populated areas. The requirement applies to both domestic and foreign vehicles.

What types of environmental stickers are there?

There are three types of environmental stickers: green (for vehicles meeting Euro 4, 5, or 6 standards), yellow (for Euro 3 diesel vehicles), and red (for Euro 2 diesel vehicles). Since 2015, most cities only allow green stickers.

How to determine which sticker your car needs?

The sticker type depends on your vehicle's Euro emission standard, which is typically found in your vehicle registration documents. You can also use our license plate checker to determine which sticker your vehicle qualifies for.

Where and how to get an environmental sticker?

You can order an environmental sticker online through authorized dealers like Duitsemilieusticker.nl. Simply enter your license plate number, verify your vehicle's eligibility, and complete your order. The sticker will be shipped to your address.

Sticker usage rules and fines

The sticker must be properly affixed to the windshield and clearly visible. Driving without a sticker or with an incorrect sticker in an environmental zone can result in fines ranging from €40 to €80, depending on the city and circumstances.

Exemptions and special cases

Some vehicles may be exempt from the sticker requirement, including certain emergency vehicles, motorcycles, and vehicles with special permits. Classic cars with H-plates may also have special regulations depending on the city.
